BEST PRACTICE -I

TITLE OF THE PRACTICE:ZEAL-AN INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS FEST FOR WOMEN

OBJECTIVES OF THE PRACTICE:

The main goal of this year-long practice is to raise the standards of sports, to provide experience leadership quality, discipline, foster sportsmanship and fraternity among them while broadening the field of sports to impart knowledge of new rules and cutting-edge techniques to identify talented athletes and to give exposure to good players to higher levels of competition, and develop student`s psychological and social values.

THE CONTEXT

B.M.S College for Women hosted the annual intercollegiate sports festival “ZEAL” from July 4 to July 6, 2022. The games organised were Volleyball, Throwball for students and staff, Hand ball, Kho-Kho, Ball Badminton, Kabaddi, Netball, and Shuttle Badminton.

Smt. Amulya Kamal, an international football player, Ekalavya awardee, an alumna of BMSCW was the chief guest, Sri Aviram Sharma, Trustee BMS Educational Trust, Sri Anirbhan Sharma, Finance Officer BMSET, Sri Sanjeeva B S, Senior Manager Finance BMSET, Dr. P.Puttaraj, Principal BMSCW and Smt. B .Padma ,Principal BMSPU College for Women were guests of the event.

The sports events would not have been possible without the valuable contribution for zeal namely Sri Mahendra Munot, Proprietor, Maruthi Medicals, an international players Sri.Kabaddi Babu, Smt.Kamala, and Sri Chaluvararaya Swami were the key sponsorer. Sri Priya Krishna provided refreshments on each of the three days. Smt. Gayatri provided soft drinks for all the games.Smt. Bharati Appajappa and Sri Jayaram, a former Panchayat President, provided bags for seniors. The majority of the management budget was put to use for providing tracksuits, jerseys for our college players and wildcraft bags as individual awards for the players who had won in the tournament in respective games. Best-player awards were sponsored by BMS sports alumni.

THE PRACTICE

Just like its name implies, Zeal is all about people who are passionate about sports, especially women who are enthusiastic about sports. Zeal encourages female students from various colleges to participate in sports as it gives them a fresh perspective on life and a new approach to deal with obstacles. It also encourages female staff members to give their sportsmanship spirit wings, thereby contributing to the empowerment of women.

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS

The students of B.M.S. College for Women have achieved great success in higher level competitions.This practice has encouraged students to pursue Physical Education as a career, who are now striving to reach greater heights by enhancing their skills and techniques. The event was a huge success as it gave students a sense of accomplishment, increased their passion and motivation for the respective sport they play, and inspired them to advance towards top ranking competitions and accomplish great success in life.

Apart from the sportsman, the non-sportsman was also inspired and took up the sport as a recreation /as a profession, to stay physically and mentally fit throughout the life as health became their first priority.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND RESOURCES REQUIRED:

Students faced various psychological factors such as analysing the strength of the opponent, and different ways to tackle it, the constant pressure of the crowd and execution of the skill during the competitions was a challenge. The overall performance varied in few players where they needed counselling. Students need counselling to overcome their negative points.

BEST PRACTICE -II

TITLE OF THE PRACTICE: FEMALE HEALTH AND HYGIENE

OBJECTIVES OF THE PRACTICE:

Maintaining hygiene practices reduces the spread of illness and risk of medical conditions caused by not taking care of themselves. Better hygiene of the student leads to better health, confidence and overall growth of an individual. Awareness on AIDS, Cancer and diabetes to the students and the community.

THE CONTEXT

The restrooms are kept up neat and clean The restrooms are available at 3 floors, 2 pad vending machines and 3 incinerators for disposing the pads are available for students in the campus. Awareness on AIDS, Cancer and diabetes to the students and the community.

THE PRACTICE

The students and staff have access to BMS Hospital for the regular checkup at nominal rates.Every student and staff have a health insurance policy funded by the management. An awareness programme about menstrual health and the use of different menstrual products was also organized at the college by the teachers. Students were made aware to ensure proper hygiene and to make us of various products to secure their safety on their own. Every quarterly fumigation is done for eradication of mosquitoes. Inhouse counsellor is also available in the college for counselling the students regarding academic and personal issues.Clean drinking water is made available for the students and staff. All the students have access to college gym and they go through the physical activities to stay themselves physically fit. Taking into the consideration of students and staff health, the canteen provides healthy food.

Inhouse doctor from BMS Hospital is also available for staff and students in the college campus at “KSHEMA” health care center.

“Public interaction and awareness program on diabetes” was conducted on 14/11/2021 to mark world Diabetes Day. The students visited certain parks, interacted with public and brought awareness about Diabetes.

World AIDS day is celebrated on 2 nd December. Students of I, II and III B.Sc (Zoology) created awareness on AIDS by a dance drama in the college open auditorium.

Students conducted community engagement Program in selected schools of Bengaluru on 4 th February 2022, World Cancer Day. As a part of Fostering Social Responsibility & Community Engagement, students have taken an initiative to educate teenagers about the key risk factors, of Cancer. Students delivered lecture on the topic “Adulterated food and risk factors of Cancer”.

On account of World Cancer Day, 4 th Feb 2022, the college organized a Webinar on “Cancer Awareness for Women”. Dr. Suma M N, Associate Professor, Pathology, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology Bengaluru was the Guest Speaker

EVIDENCE OF SUCCESS

The College promotes the well-being of its students and encourages students for community engagement in educating teenagers about risk factors of cancer, awareness on AIDS and diabetes. The students are making use of the pad vending machine, incinerators, drinking clean water, and maintaining their physical and mental health.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND RESOURCES REQUIRED:

1. As many of the students are from low economic background, the use of different menstrual products is not reasonable for themselves to purchase. As the student’s strength is more, procurement of pad vending machines is required.

2. Getting permission from local authorities for conducting the awareness program.
